the Treasury. After mature consideration
I have come
to the conclusion that it is
in
necessary
to have here 2 Service Companies of an European Regiment complete strength, and this 2 Battalions, with 3 full Companies of the Beyton Rifles will be ample for the duties required of them - this will be a saving of £. 8570. 7 per
annum.
6.
The Medical Department appears capable of being reduced by one Deputy Inspector General of Hospitals, and two Staff Assistant Surgeons, give a further saving of £1570. 15 per
annum.
7.
The Ordnance and Commissariat when contrasted with the small numerical force, here, seem to me to be
unnecessarily extensive, but not being
sufficiently conversant with the duties of these Departments, I am unable to offer
any satisfactory suggestions relative to their reduction, but I presume that they are susceptible of a corresponding
reduction suitable to that which I now propose should be made in the Force.
8.
The services of a Fort Adjutant
may
be deemed unnecessary, as I presume
the Major of Brigade will be fully equal to take the duties at present appertaining
to the office of Fort Adjutant,
in addition to his
own.
9.
This would cause a
saving of £. 122. 14 per
annum.
I should have recommended
that this Garrison Command
be considered as a Colonel or Lieutenant Colonel, and for a Colonel or
Colonel of the Battalion stationed here.
but when it is borne in recollection that
